ESCO Adopts Chapman Elementary School Through Junior Achievement

Portland, Ore. — ESCO Corporation recently adopted neighboring school Chapman Elementary as their 2006 Junior Achievement partner.  Over 40 ESCO employees put in more than 200 hours of in class time, plus additional hours of classroom preparation. ESCO employees were encouraged to volunteer in the class room one hour each week for a five week commitment. So many ESCO employees committed to volunteering their time that ESCO was able to adopt the entire school for the second year in a row. Every classroom gets to participate in Junior Achievement lesson plans facilitated by one or two ESCO employees.

Junior Achievement uses hands-on experiences to help young people understand the economics of life. In partnership with business and educators, Junior Achievement brings the real world to students, opening their minds to their potential. Lesson plans include community and civic lessons such as how to operate a business and how local governments operate.

“ESCO has worked with Junior Achievement in Portland since it’s inception in 1950. Hank Swigert, part of the ESCO founding family, was instrumental in bringing the program to Portland. It is an organization that truly teaches students life skills and helps them understand what it means to be a contributing member of society. Bringing ESCO employees into the classroom is an opportunity for students to meet all kinds of workers and understand that there are jobs outside of what their parents and teachers do. Interacting with foundry workers, engineers, plant managers and marketing professionals exposes students to rewarding career choices,” said Steve Pratt, Chairman and CEO.

ESCO Corporation is a global group of companies that manufactures engineered metal parts and components for industrial applications. A privately held company, ESCO Corporation has called Northwest Portland home for 93 years. The company employs over 4,000 in four operating groups with manufacturing, distribution, and sales offices on six continents.

Junior Achievement Portland/Vancouver reaches approximately 30,000 students per year. Through age-appropriate curricula, Junior Achievement programs begin at the elementary school level, teaching children how they can impact the world around them as individuals, workers and consumers. Junior Achievement programs continue through the middle and high school grades, preparing students for future economic and workforce issues they'll face.

Chapman Elementary School is a NW neighborhood Portland Public school serving approximately 465 students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
